Summary: The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership has primary leadership responsibility for the School of Business and Leadership

Reporting Relationship: The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership reports administratively to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Dean provides direct supervision for the school’s faculty and other personnel.

Essential Characteristics and Skills: The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership is, first and foremost, a Christian of mature faith who can clearly articulate his/her relationship with Jesus Christ. The Dean is committed to advancing the mission of KCU as a leader in the School of Business and Leadership and can clearly demonstrate the role of ministry in business. The Dean will be able to manage a team and effectively monitor and measure outcomes for continued success while also being approachable by students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership has the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Provide leadership to the School of Business and Leadership.
  1. Coordinate the operations of the School of Business and Leadership.
  1. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the university’s administration, other divisions and departments within the University, related facilities, and the community.
  1. Participate in the preparation and administration of the School of Business and Leadership budget.
  1. Screen and recommend candidates for faculty appointment, retention, and promotion.
  1. Develop and implement program policies.
  1. Facilitate continuing academic and professional development for the faculty.
  1. Ensure the faculty shall be adequate in number and composition to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the School of Business and Leadership and its curriculum in relation to the stated purpose, philosophy, objectives, number of classes and students admitted annually.
  1. Mentor School of Business and Leadership faculty to enhance their teaching role.
  1. Lead the development of new undergraduate and graduate programs within the School of Business and Leadership.
  1. Represent the School of Business and Leadership on the Academic Council and other committees.
  1. Represent the University as a spokesperson to the various publics to which it addresses itself, and provide such information as may be necessary to assure clear understanding of the state of the School of Business and Leadership, its needs, and its mission.
  1. Ensure that all faculty and staff positions within the School of Business and Leadership are filled with qualified individuals for both present and future needs.
  1. Promote coordination of the strategic planning efforts as they relate to the School of Business and Leadership.
  1. Ensure that the School of Business and Leadership complies with all Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges regulations and accreditation standards.
  1. Represent the School of Business and Leadership and provide leadership within the larger academic community and professional associations.
  1. Engage the tristate business community as a leader in support of economic development.
  1. Participate in institutional advancement activities as requested by the Office of Advancement related to annual fundraising.
  1. Supervise, develop, and review the performance of those individuals who report to the Dean of the School of Business and Leadership.
  1. Take an active leadership role in recruiting and retaining School of Business and Leadership students. This includes personal involvement and ensuring appropriate levels of participation by School of Business and Leadership faculty members.
  1. Maintain and comply with all policies, rules, and regulations included in the KCU Staff and Faculty Handbooks.
  1. Additional duties that may be required or assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  The individual holding this position must possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  1. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  2.  Ability to compute rates, percentages, and ratios.
  3. Ability to read and comprehend detailed instructions, correspondence, memos, budget reports, audit reports, state licensing forms, evaluation forms and assessments, general business journals, professional journals, technical procedures, and various governmental information reporting forms and papers.
  4. Ability to clearly write, in English, complex correspondence, memos, and reports.
  5. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small or large group situations, both personally and over the telephone.
  6. Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  7. Ability to define problems, evaluate, and make independent decisions based on experience or knowledge with supervision.
  8. Ability to use computer technology, particularly as related to distance education technologies, at an advanced level.
  9. Sufficient manual dexterity in at least one hand to be able to operate all electronic and computer equipment (keyboards, calculators, printers, etc.), and manually complete paperwork such as signing completed reports.
  10. Ability to listen and hear faculty, staff, and administrators speak about distance learning activities.
  11. Ability to sit and/or stand and continuously perform essential job functions for a nine (9) hour day, with an hour lunch break.
  12. Ability to grasp and lift or otherwise move goods weighing up to 10 pounds.
  13. Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately with minimal direct supervision within three (3) months after the employee begins work.
  14. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

OTHER ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:  Current university operations and building designs ordinarily require the individual to reach, bend, lift, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform similar physical functions while doing the work of Dean (e.g., looking for files, carrying files, and other reports, and loading paper into printers). All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury or to demonstrate otherwise or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

QUALIFICATION: 

  1. Education: The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership should hold an earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline related to the educational programs of the School of Business and Leadership.
  1. Experience: The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership must be an experienced faculty member and must have served previously in capacities that demonstrate the ability to lead faculty in continual improvement. The Dean must have a working knowledge of current business practices, principles, and standards as evidenced through extensive business/professional experience. The ideal candidate will bring preparation through education and experience that demonstrate one’s ability to both lead the School of Business and Leadership and provide exceptional instruction to students enrolled in the School’s classes. In addition to extensive business/professional experience, the Dean must have experience working in diverse settings and be student-centered. The Dean must have experience building programs, recruiting students, and establishing a network of internship opportunities for business majors. The preferred candidate will have experience in programmatic accreditation for business programs.
  1. Values: The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership must be sympathetic to the mission and purpose of Kentucky Christian University, enthusiastically support the University’s core values, and agree to Kentucky Christian University’s Covenant of Faith. Preference will be given to applicants who are active members of an independent Christian Church/Church of Christ. The Dean must be a self-starter who inspires excellence in others by his/her own work ethic. The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership must accept ownership of her/his area of responsibility and provide leadership throughout the University community.
